About Skiatook, OK

The city of Skiatook is actually spread out over two counties, Osage and Tulsa. This is not uncommon for Tulsa suburbs, maybe because the areas were formerly American Indian territories and were already divided into distinct districts.

People are often curious about the unusual town name, but they’ll have to keep wondering because there are at least 3 different versions of how the city got its name, although none of them have been verified.

Progress moved quickly for the town from 1904 to 1912. Residents saw the first permanent structure, a bank, built in only a month. The Midland Valley Railroad came to Skiatook, and the area’s weekly newspaper was started. By 1906, natural gas and public telephone lines were available to residents and businesses, then official school buildings were erected, roads and bridges were begun, and by 1912, cement sidewalks were in place and many improvements in the water, sewer, and electrical systems had been made.

Today, Skiatook’s downtown area is undergoing cleanup and rejuvenation efforts. There are many stores, antique shops, art galleries and restaurants there, plus the Skiatook Museum. Every year, Skiatook residents and visitors can enjoy the Pioneer Days Festival, a Bluegrass Festival, arts and craft shows, fishing tournaments, and a spectacular Christmas parade.
